My wife’s aunt had an 05 and really liked it, hatch like that with the 2.5 4spd auto, (she has a Crostrek now.)  She did the head gasket at something like 90,000, (sold it at 110,000 ish a couple years later) She’s a hiker so it had quite a bit of gravel/logging road miles.

Needs moar Saabaru...

Might want to check for rust (though I tend to see it more on the bugeyes) if it has not always been a CA car.

Apart from eating head gaskets, they aren’t too bad. At 161k miles, I would find out last time they had it replaced.

Definitely find out if it’s ever had the headgaskets and timing belt changed and at how many miles.

My wife had an ‘04 that went through ignition coils. It was an easy part to change; unplug the spark plugs, undo a couple bolts, and reverse to assemble. In the last three years she had it I changed it four times. Even the dealer couldn’t figure out why it was going through them.

Yeah definitely check into the timing belt and head gaskets. It looks like an awesome car. Apparently the heads can weep coolant.

There is a flaw in the casting in the non turbo blocks.

If I remember correctly, you’re shopping for a car for your son?

Why not something like this ?

Pick me up that x1/9 while you’re out?

Around here I’d say that impreza will be rotted out behind the rear wheels, but out there I’m going to go with head gaskets and timing belt - make sure they’ve been done.

Run https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/other-products/antifreeze/dominator-coolant-boost/?code=RDCBCN-EA

It’ll help. I ran https://www.evanscoolant.com/products/high-performance-coolant/ and never had a problem with the head gasket with nearly 150k on the car, full bolt ons including cams and we started working on the ECU. Run a 40wt oil as well. The Evans coolant requires a complete draining though.

I had a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5TS wagon, so same engine and trans as that one. Same body as well, really, other than the front fascia and rear lights and a few interior bits.

Check around the rear wheel wells - also make sure to check the front control arms (there was a rust recall on those) and the rear subrames and rear strut mounts can rust out as well (cracked rear subframe was what killed mine).

As always, check that the head gaskets aren’t bad, as always. Otherwise, very nice cars....I really miss mine.

Also....I am obligated to tell you to buy the FIAT because reasons, also it be epic.

They are safe cars but check on the timing belt and head gaskets. Also the rust in the rear arches is something to lol for.

Wild suggestion: get a manual E90 325i/328i/330i. The naturally aspirated inline six is reliable and easy to work on. It’s a safe, modern car and can be bought for like $7k or less easily with reasonable miles. Still fun to drive (so you can have fun with it) but tame enough for a teen.
